Ai Nikkor 20mm F3.5は1979年3月発売。Nikkor-N・C Auto 24mm F2.8の後釜として購入した。
Ai Nikkor 20mm F2.8Sは1984年12月発売だが、マニュアルフォーカスレンズとして今でも販売されている。中古のレンズを2012年12月に購入した。
焦点距離20mmのレンズが捉える光景は日常的には体験できず、想像できない広がりがある。
F3.5とF2.8で撮った写真は、リサイズすると区別できないが、F2.8の方が綺麗に撮れている。最近の広角レンズは素直に樽型に歪曲するので補正しやすいが、古いこれらのレンズは陣笠状に歪曲するので補正が難しい。被写界深度が深いので、目測で合わせて撮影することが多い。手ブレの影響も少ないので慣れれば手持ちで低速シャッターも切れる。
日中は偏光フィルターを使うことが多い。
